European Industry is leading the world in many areas of technology. It is capable of the complete range, from chip set design to manufacture, integration and certification of major systems and provision of innovative services. It is consequently supporting the European Union initiative to build all the elements of the European satellite timing and positioning system called Galileo. This project will open a new market for many applications and services in addition to those rapidly expanding for GPS systems.

Because of the wide range of companies spread across Europe interested in future markets for Galileo applications, Oregin (Organization of European Gnss equipment and service Industries) was formed in February 1999 to provide a medium for information exchange and cross-fertilisation of expertise.

Oregin's mission is to back up the Galileo Programme right from the definition phase in order to obtain early operational benefits and standardise Galileo-based products. Oregin provides a point of contact for the European Union, European Commission and Space industry for Galileo user segment related views. It disseminates information from the Galileo projects to the manufacturing industries of Europe that are interested in Galileo but not directly involved.

Oregin supports the interests of any European industry regardless of size, and benefits from the vast experience of leading industrial groups combined with the innovative spirit and responsiveness of SMEs.

Oregin is already proving its capabilities in supporting the Galileo programme by:

  • providing expertise at the user segment level in the major European projects,
  • supporting European industry through publicity and lobbying actions aimed at European and National Institutions and within European industry itself,
  • fostering co-operation with non-European industries, creating opportunities in overseas and global markets.

This activity is considered as an essential step towards consolidation of European industry positions in the fast moving globalisation process.
